In this step you select where you want to install Mac OS 8.1. The Installer automatically selects the most appropriate destination disk. In most cases, this is the internal hard disk. Choosing a destination disk NOTE: If you want to create and use a Mac OS Extended format volume, make sure that you read the file “About Mac OS Extended format”. If you know you want to install Mac OS 8.1 on a disk other than your internal hard disk, select the disk using the Destination pop-up menu. If you don’t have enough disk space You see a message if you don’t have enough space available for a standard installation. Depending on the options you choose later, you may need as much as 210 MB of space available. If there isn’t enough space available, you need to remove files from the disk before installing the software. Make sure you have backup copies of any programs or documents you want to keep. Performing a clean installation Click the perform clean installation button if you have already installed Mac OS 8.1 and are experiencing problems and you've tried all the troubleshooting tips in the manual. A clean installation creates a new System Folder instead of updating your existing one. After performing a clean installation you must re-install any third-party extensions, control panels, or fonts in your new System Folder. Refer to the troubleshooting section of the installation manual for more information.
